About the flag

Angola is correct. The flag’s emblem—a yellow half gear, machete, and star—evokes industry, the peasantry/armed struggle, and international solidarity, while the red and black recall sacrifice and Africa. It was adopted in 1975 after independence from Portugal under the MPLA. Memory tip: think “An-gear-la”—the gear points to Angola. By contrast, Algeria’s flag features a crescent, Botswana’s is light blue with a black-white stripe, and Equatorial Guinea has a tricolor with a tree in its coat of arms. Angola is Portuguese-speaking, with Luanda as its capital and a major oil economy; a 2003 redesign proposal wasn’t adopted, so this emblematic design remains.
