Country: Bosnia and Herzegovina

About the flag

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s flag features a yellow triangle and a line of white stars on blue—symbols of the country’s three constituent peoples and its European orientation. Adopted in 1998 after the Dayton Peace Agreement, the design intentionally avoids favoring any one group: the triangle also echoes the country’s map, and the “endless” stars suggest continuity and a European identity. To distinguish it from the options: Cyprus shows a copper-colored map with olive branches; Switzerland is a red square with a white cross; Denmark (the Dannebrog) is a red field with a white Nordic cross. Memory tip: think “Bosnia’s three corners and a path of stars”—three corners for Bosniaks, Croats, and Serbs; stars for Europe.
