About the flag

This is Cuba’s flag, known as La Estrella Solitaria (“The Lone Star”). Designed by Narciso López in 1849 and adopted at independence in 1902, its lone star symbolizes sovereignty; the red triangle reflects liberty, equality, and fraternity—and the sacrifices for freedom—while the three blue stripes represent the island’s original districts, separated by white for purity. Memory tip: Cuba and Puerto Rico have look‑alike flags with inverted colors. Cuba’s triangle is red and the stripes are blue; Puerto Rico’s triangle is blue with red stripes. Remember it as Cuba = hot red triangle (Caribbean heat), Puerto Rico = cool blue triangle.
