About the flag

Germany is correct. Its national colors are the famous black–red–gold, a horizontal tricolor associated with German unity and democracy. That sets it apart from the options: Austria’s flag is red–white–red, Italy’s stripes run vertically (green–white–red), and Luxembourg uses a light blue instead of gold and different proportions. The colors trace back to the Lützow Free Corps in the Napoleonic Wars (black uniforms with red facings and gold buttons) and became a liberal symbol during the 1848 revolutions. They were later adopted by the Weimar Republic and restored in West Germany in 1949, then for unified Germany in 1990. Memory tip: Germans often say “Schwarz–Rot–Gold”—hearing it during football tournaments will lock the order in your mind.
