About the flag

This flag is a plain red-over-white bicolor with no symbols, which sets it apart from the options shown: China’s has yellow stars, Bahrain’s has a serrated white edge, and Tajikistan’s features a crown and green band. Called the Merah Putih (“red and white”), its colors symbolize courage and purity and trace back to the Majapahit Empire. It was raised at the proclamation of independence on 17 August 1945. Fun fact: it’s almost identical to Monaco’s flag, differing mainly in shade and proportions. The nation it represents is a vast archipelago of over 17,000 islands and the world’s fourth-most-populous country.
