About the flag

Correct—this is Jamaica. Adopted at independence in 1962, its black, green, and gold symbolize: black for the strength and resilience of the people, green for the island’s fertile lands and hope, and gold for natural wealth and sunshine. It’s also the only national flag that contains no red, white, or blue—a handy way to distinguish it from many others. To remember it, think of the phrase often used to summarize the flag’s meaning: “Hardships there are, but the land is green and the sun shineth.” By contrast, Haiti’s and Chile’s flags use red, white, and blue, and Antigua and Barbuda features a rising sun.
