Country: Kosovo

About the flag

Kosovo is correct. Its flag, adopted in 2008 upon declaring independence, uniquely places a gold silhouette of the country beneath six white stars. The stars symbolize Kosovo’s major communities—Albanians, Serbs, Turks, Gorani, Roma, and Bosniaks—highlighting a multiethnic identity. Very few national flags feature a map; Kosovo and Cyprus are the famous exceptions. To remember it: think “new state, showing itself”—the map makes that literal, and the six stars cue “six communities.” This sets it apart from lookalikes: Bosnia and Herzegovina has a yellow triangle with a star line, Switzerland is a red field with a white cross, and Lithuania is a yellow-green-red tricolor. Kosovo’s capital is Pristina, and the country is one of Europe’s newest and partially recognized states.
