Country: Liechtenstein

About the flag

Liechtenstein is correct—the princely crown marks it as the Alpine microstate’s flag, distinct from Switzerland’s cross or the designs of the Czech Republic and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The crown was added in 1937 after the 1936 Olympics revealed Liechtenstein’s flag was otherwise identical to Haiti’s. To remember it: think “little principality, little crown.” The colors traditionally evoke blue skies and the warm red glow of evening hearths, while the crown symbolizes the unity of the people with their prince. Liechtenstein is a tiny, German-speaking, doubly landlocked country between Austria and Switzerland; its capital is Vaduz, and it even uses the Swiss franc.
