Nepal is the only country with a non-rectangular national flag—two stacked pennants bearing the sun and moon—so it stands out clearly from the rectangular flags of Bahrain, Iran, and North Korea. Its crimson color represents bravery and Nepal’s national flower (rhododendron), while the blue border symbolizes peace. The sun and moon signify permanence and harmony, often linked to Nepal’s varied climate and the lofty Himalayas. The modernized design was codified in 1962 but traces back centuries.
