Country: Paraguay

About the flag

Paraguay is the only country with a national flag that has different emblems on each side—front with the national coat of arms (star and wreath, “República del Paraguay”) and reverse with the treasury seal (a lion and Phrygian cap, “Paz y Justicia”). That unique two-sided design sets it apart from lookalikes in the options. Adopted in 1842 and inspired by revolutionary tricolors, the red-white-blue symbolizes liberty and independence. Paraguay is one of only two landlocked countries in South America (with Bolivia), centered on the Paraguay and Paraná rivers—key to its history and trade. Memory tip: “Para-why two sides?”—Paraguay’s flag literally has two faces, making it easy to remember.
