About the flag

Romania’s flag is the plain vertical tricolor of blue, yellow, and red. That distinguishes it from lookalikes in the options: Andorra has a similar layout but includes a coat of arms, Luxembourg’s stripes are horizontal (light blue–white–red), and Malta’s is white and red with the George Cross. The Romanian tricolor dates to the 1848 revolution and was officially adopted in 1866, with colors often explained as blue for liberty, yellow for justice, and red for fraternity. Memory tip: Romania’s flag is famously almost identical to Chad’s—Chad’s blue is darker—but unlike Andorra, Romania keeps the center clean with no emblem.
