About the flag

South Sudan is correct. Its flag, adopted at independence in 2011, features Pan-African colors with a blue triangle bearing a gold star symbolizing unity; blue also represents the Nile. The design originated with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement during the struggle that led to the creation of the world’s newest country. Memory tip: think “Star over the Nile”—the gold star in the blue field sets it apart. Colors carry meaning: black for the people, red for the blood shed, green for the land, white for peace. Among the options, only South Sudan uses this blue-and-gold emblem.
