Turkmenistan is correct. The crescent and five stars reflect Islam and the country’s five regions, while the distinctive vertical band of carpet “guls” honors the five major Turkmen tribes and their famed carpet-weaving tradition. Green is a traditional Turkmen and Islamic color. Memory tip: no other national flag showcases carpet motifs—think “Turk-men-tapestry.” This makes it easy to distinguish from China’s red flag with five stars, India’s saffron-white-green tricolor with the blue Ashoka Chakra, and Myanmar’s yellow-green-red tricolor with a white star. Turkmenistan sits on the historic Silk Road, known for the ancient city of Merv and vast natural gas reserves, including the Darvaza “Door to Hell” gas crater.
