About the flag

Ukraine is correct: its flag is two horizontal bands of blue over yellow. By contrast, Spain has red–yellow–red with a coat of arms, Bulgaria is white–green–red, and Kosovo features a blue field with a map and stars. The colors reflect Ukraine’s landscape—blue skies above golden wheat fields—fitting for a country known as Europe’s “breadbasket.” First used in 1918 and restored in 1992 after independence from the Soviet Union, the flag symbolizes peace, prosperity, and national resilience. Memory tip: think “sky over grain.” You’ll also see the Tryzub (trident) as Ukraine’s coat of arms, a symbol dating back to medieval Kyivan Rus’.
